Short description
A hidden-information space 4X for 2 to 4 civilizations. Everything you build makes you louder, and loud civilizations get found. Conquer your rivals, or finish an Ark and leave before anyone reaches it.
Description
The universe should be full of life, and it is silent. In The Quiet Dark, the silence is a choice: the civilizations out there are hiding, because the ones that didn’t were put out.
Two to four civilizations share a board of hexes and fog. Every colony, every level of development and every fleet adds to your Signature, and detection rolls against it, so the quieter player usually finds the louder one first. Expanding is how you get strong, and how you get found. The game is the referee: it rolls in private and shows each player only what their own pieces have seen.
Win by being the last civilization with a colony, by building the Ark and leaving before anyone can stop it, or by holding the best score when the long night ends. Later in the game there are quieter weapons: rocks thrown across sectors, cloaked fleets, a lance of light, a swarm that eats worlds. And with the Forest rule on, something far older is listening too.
Features
- Hidden information enforced by the game: private rolls, fog, ghosts of what you saw last, and rivals who are “unknown” until you find them.
- Signature and detection: growth is noise, and the quiet see first.
- Four victories: Last Light, Ascendance (the Ark), Long Night, and the optional Quiet Dark.
- One-die combat on a results table, with every outcome shown before you commit.
- A late game of untraceable weapons, each with an answer: mass drivers, Shroud refits, the Lance, the Swarm, the Cage, Worldbreakers and the Silence.
- The Forest: an optional third player that erases civilizations who stay loud.
- Play against the AI, or hot-seat with friends on one PC.
- An illustrated opening story: five civilizations who were not quiet enough.
